mother nature

You may write me down in history but today is not the day. I am all around you, if only you’d look around. One might call me Mother Nature or perhaps the Great Mother, I see the world in colours – to see what I see you have to take a closer look at me. If you allow your eyes to continue, you will see what I mean.

Red. Red is the very dirt that you trod on, pressed down by concrete streets until it is nothing but a whisper, a whisper of red dust rising above constraints. Red is the bear berries that bears feast upon, smooth edges and leathery skin, the echoing crunch of the delicate fruit surrounded by the blooming mass of bell-shaped fairy flowers. Red is the desert sands of the Australian outback, the bare flat ground stretching on for miles; gibber stones glinting in the burning sunlight; one lonely shrub that has survived the drought. Red, the colour of blinding anger, it is the colour of spilt blood on battlegrounds. And yet, red is your lovers lips pressed against yours, sweet honey and lemon juice dripping down your fingers and lips, sticky on your skin. Red: passion intertwined with confusion.

It is me and it is you.

Yellow. Yellow is the sun seeping through your blinds filling you with warmth – bright and sharp in the morning, fiery and bold at noon, peachy and soft in the evening – sinking into your skin, melting your heart, bringing you renewed joy. Yellow is a dandelion, so under appreciated but so soft and delicate in your hands, as it grows weary it will tire and grow grey, it will float wherever the wind takes it. Much like you. Yellow begins deep in the heart, it spreads throughout the body until it radiates through your throat – light-hearted laughter glossed with happiness. Yellow is friendship, much like the friendship between the sun and moon – yellow is the last whisper of the sun before the moon brings in the tide.

It is me and it is you.

Green. Green is a forest of wonders -the moss covered branches on a ancient tree growing from a past rooted in pain, enveloped by a fog filled with mystery as the leaves blow in the gentle wind, the magnificent tree surrounded by huts that hold its history’s shame. Green is the colour of the wise and generous turtle. Its shell once smooth, now worn out with gaps. To the small organisms taking shelter on its shell, these gaps are a hundred miles wide, but to you they are a thin thread of string – you do not care to look closely. Green is the start of a new life, growth and a new possibility.

It is me and it is you.

Blue. Blue is the rain, damp and refreshing on your cheeks, the pitter-patter of the diamonds from the sky carrying a peaceful tune. Blue is the tide that the moon carried so the sun could sleep. Blue is the colour of forget-me-nots, their legacy holds for they are not yet forgotten, but has yours held? Blue is the feeling of relief washing over you – a peaceful sensation filled with stability.

It is me and it is you.

I am Mother Nature and I bring you the gifts my ancestors gave – you have been blessed with a body, use it well and you will see the connection we all share – I give a simple warning:

Look around

Look around

Look around.

  1. Dear Judy,

All I can say is, Wow. I have no words to describe what I felt while reading your piece. It brought a whole different view on what is around me, the way you made the simplest things around us into something so magnificent, caught me off guard (in a good way).

I cannot think of any feedback. I read this about 5 times now and I have finally found a mistake. There are a few GUMPS, which is a quick fix. Other than that this piece is amazing. Thank you for sharing.

    Sincerely,
    Enameka

    1. Dearest Enameka,

  2. Judy:

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but after what you’ve written, I’m pretty sure the saying should become “The work of Judy is worth a thousand pictures”. No way you’re just in grade ten, because what I just read probably rivals (If not exceeds) any of the works that I have ever written… ever.

You have a gift, and that is to dig into the minds of your readers and inject images into their brain, and doing it in such short lines too! I personally and not very big on pieces all about description, but something was different here. I’ve never actually felt engaged by a piece that highlights every detail about nature (As it usually proves to be such an overused topic, but something, something was different here! I’m still trying to figure out why i love reading this so much!

I really don’t know how to start with any suggestions for you, and all I can really provide is that I wish that you had covered the color (Yes, yes, It’s not ACTUALLY a color, but still…) black as well. I feel like it could add a very different twist on the realities of Mother Nature, how black is this void of uncertainty that every being comes out of and eventually just slips back in to. Just some food for thought though.

Judy, you have managed to earn even more of the considerable amount of respect I hold for you. Seriously, how do you do that.

    Judy Gu
