western at heart

“A horse doesn’t care how much you know until he knows how much you care. Put your hand on your horse and your heart in your hand.” -Pat Parelli

Hello! My name is Juleanna Kool, and this is a sneak peek as to who I am and what I am all about!

With zero doubt in my mind, family is first and foremost in my life. These people are the ones who have molded me into the individual I am today. With every value and and lesson instilled in me, my family has taken part in each aspect of my life.

It is a result of my parents that my unbounded love for horses and the western lifestyle has grown tenfold. Dating back to when my parents lived in Kamloops, BC, my mom purchased French Toast, who was a badly beaten racehorse fresh off the track, headed to the slaughterhouse. With an extensive amount of patience French Toast and my mom began an undeniable relationship that would last for years to come.

Contrary to popular belief, I am not just a random crazy horse girl! My     fondness for the western lifestyle stems from an extensive family ancestry, all the way from my great great great grandparents. Escaping from war within Russia, my ancestors traveled to small town Maple Creek, Saskatchewan to start a new life on a farm. It was on this farm that my family’s devotion to farming, rodeo, and ranching grew and was sewn into each new generation.

With the love for horses sewn into my personality, I have spent every possible moment learning and experiencing things about the western lifestyle. No matter how I am feeling, my attachment to these beautiful creatures helps me to feel better in every way possible. Their presence soothes my aching heart in wanting to live out in the country. Time spent with horses and in the saddle is never time wasted.

It is because of my love for horses, that I have taken every opportunity possible to work with them. Starting late last year, I was able to volunteer at a barn just outside of Calgary. At this barn, I was able to fulfill my love for riding and being able to work with horses. It was only a couple months ago that I got an incredible chance to work with a mare named Nessa. Nessa is the horse who I am currently able to visit and ride and she is teaching me numerous things each and every day.

Adding upon my love for the western life, I deeply enjoy country music. This type of music resonates with my passion for horses, and my desire to live out in the countryside. Country music gives off a small town feel and simply makes me feel happy about the lyrics I am listening to.

Besides my obvious admiration for the western lifestyle, I do appreciate other things. In conjunction with my deep appreciation for family, I love to travel with them. As a family, we make it a goal to go to the beach at least once a year as it is our way of unwinding from a stressful year. Any time spent with my family is time well spent.

Alongside these things about me, I greatly enjoy helping others. My love for helping others fuels my decisions as it makes me take into regard the situation of others and how I can benefit them. It is my goals to continue to help others, even in the slightest. With this in mind, I am looking to take a path in the emergency services so I can serve others when they are in need.

A large puzzle piece that makes me who I am, is my religion. It is always something I am referring to as it helps to guide my decisions and has taught me important life lessons. As a Christian, I find strength in every aspect of my religion and it has helped shape me into who I am today.

This beautiful western lifestyle has taught me so many life lessons that I carry with me everyday. These lessons are not limited to responsibility, hard work, and how to be a good leader. There is nothing I would trade for this opportunity to be able to work with such incredible animals. My love for this life is never ending and it makes me who I am.

  1. Dear Juleanna,

I believe that you did an amazing job conveying your passions for horses and your western lifestyle. I honestly find it fascinating how you were able to connect everything with your love for horses whether it was in the words or in the pictures. It is also inspiring how you are able to speak freely and are so loyal to your beliefs and passions and I noticed that a lot during our time knowing each other. I also absolutely loved how you included a quote in the beginning that I know you actually connect with and didn’t just include it for no reason.
I would, personally, loved to know more about you, besides your passion for horses, which is arguable since it is a part of you. I would just simply appreciated if you were to include more.
But with or without that I still really enjoyed your presentation.
    Can’t wait to read more!

    Sincerely,
    Tina

    1. Christina,

Your are such an inspiration to me within our family group! Every time you speak I become a sponge, soaking up all of the knowledge you share with the class. Though our time spent together has been limited within our class, I hope to get to know you even more!

  2. Dear Juleanna,

This was such a beautiful piece to read! You pulled me in with your Pat Parelli quote and never let me go. Although, I have already had the pleasure of getting to know you and have been a victim to your random singing bursts, reading your pechakucha made me feel as if I was getting to know you all over again. From your ancestors escaping war in Russia to you wanting to pursue a path in the emergency services, you were able to, in an impeccable way, capture and portray your past, your present and your upcoming future. While reading, I could feel the passion you have poured into your piece which was quite inspiring.
I can’t really find anything to pick on. So, I will be very nit-picky and say that you should try and avoid repetition of the phrase ‘able to’. In the part where you talk about working with Nessa, you used this phrase quite a bit, but overall it was a pleasure to learn about you.
Thank you so much for sharing your story.

    Much love,
    Saumyaa

    1. Saumyaa,

Thank you for your kind words, they have brought a smile on my face. Over the past 2 years, I have been given the beautiful opportunity to get to know you as one of my closest friends and I can’t wait for what waits ahead of us in our friendship!

  3. Dear Juleanna,
Even though I’ve already heard your pechakucha, I loved being able to read it again. I loved the way you ordered everything because it had such a nice flow to it. Each slide seemed to connect to the next in a fluid motion. I also was glad that you didn’t just make your pechakucha about horses. I got to know so many aspects of you while also getting a glimpse of just how much you love horses. It was very apparent in your pechakucha what you are passionate about and that clarity made your pechakucha easy to read. I also feel like the pictures really added to the homely western theme of your whole pechakucha. I really can’t think of much to improve on. My only suggestion would be to add a different aspect from your life to contrast from the many slides about your western culture and style. While I still think it’s amazing, it almost makes your pechakucha seem one noted in a way, but honestly, it’s not that big of a deal.
    With love,
    Franny

    1. Franny,

Over this past semester, I have been given the blessing to get to know you and your beautiful heart you share with others. Every time you speak, your personality puts a smile upon a person’s face. Thank you for your kind words and all of the knowledge you have shared with me this past semester!
